My lyric assignment was not one of my top best works but, I thought it was one of the coolest ones and that is why I chose it for one of my portfolio's. I have never really thought of a song in a deeper thought process and meaning. Also when I was looking up songs to choose, there were so many choices. Its like every song had its own background, it wasn't just a bunch and catchy words thrown together. When I realized such a little thing like that, that seem so little and not important but really it was like a whole new world of creativeness and meaning under the words. This lead to me really understanding some things better.
My Work
‘Man in the Mirror’
To Kill a Mockingbird (by Harper Lee) has a great resemblance to ‘Man in the Mirror’. I think it really shows how Boo feels with himself. If any category would be chosen for this song, it would be invisibility in my option.
The very first verse in the song is what stood out to me magnificently. The verse is “Im gonna make a change, for once un my life, it’s gonna feel real good, gonna make a difference, gonna make it right”. I think this shows how Boo Radley is disappointed in his life accomplishments and he wants to make a change and help people. People see Boo as bad and a disgrace and he wants to change “for once in [his] life”.
Another verse I thought was amazing was I'm starting with the man in the mirror (Oh yeah!) I'm asking him to change his ways (Better change!) No message could have been any clearer, If you want to make the world a better place, Take a look at yourself and then make the change.” This represent that Boo keeps seeing himself in the mirror after just being in his house for year and years and knows it’s not complicated to change and help people, you just have to stop making excused for yourself and do it.
The last verse that resembled To Kill a Mockingbird was “Who am I to be blind? Pretending not to see their needs”. This is talking about how Boo has been hiding for so long, hiding in his house, from the people, the disease, not facing his fears. He has been pretending that al of that is ok and people aren’t suffering out there but really everyone is and he just needs to look in the mirror because she answer is clear.
Overall I think what this song “Man in the Mirror” and To Kill a Mockingbird has to do with each other. Is that both Boo and the ”the man in the mirror” have been hiding and doubting themselves and making excused for their actions, thinking its ok to do not do anything and help others. Finally though Boo looked himself in the mirror and told himself what he is doing is not right and he has to change and help people, and he does.
